TEAPET #2 – MARYSIA GRAFF

A hand-crafted clay teapet, a traditional tea-drinking companion.

The Chinese say you shouldn’t drink tea alone. Buuuut if you share a few drops with a little figurine, then you’re no longer drinking by yourself! That’s how the tradition of tea pets came to be — companions for tea drinking that you sprinkle with a bit of the brew. They decorate the tea table, spark conversation, lighten the mood, and add charm to the whole tea‑making ritual.

With some teas, such as fermented puerh, the first infusion is often poured away. A tea pet keeps you from splashing it messily onto the chapan and lets you symbolically share it with your thirsty little companion. Many people also like to “treat” their tea pets to the last few drops of each brew. Over time, some tea pets change color slightly or even develop crackle — a fine, beautiful network of tiny fractures in the top layer of glaze.

The figurine is handmade by Kraków‑based artist Marysia Graff. This particular tea pet resembles a cat — or perhaps a little cat spirit. Maybe even a bit of an owl. Its colors are truly striking: bright white paired with deep cobalt blue. Utterly charming! It measures 4 cm in height, 4 cm in length, and 4 cm in width.
