Description

Tie Guan Yin is the most famous oolong tea in the world, and it’s no surprise—its elegant floral notes and refreshing fruity sweetness are unmatched. This tea often marks the beginning of many people’s journeys into quality loose leaf tea, and rightly so. Tie Guan Yin strikes a perfect balance among light oolongs, embodying all the classic characteristics of this variety, each visible yet without excess or extremes. It’s truly an excellent starting point for exploration.

The leaves of this tea are vibrant with spring brightness and relatively small, indicating a valuable early harvest. They also have a natural, irregular shape, as they are hand-rolled using the traditional Baorou method, which employs large ten-kilogram bags. This immediately points to a farmer who values quality.

What captivates us most in this particular Tie Guan Yin is its creamy smoothness and distinct milky aftertaste, more commonly associated with Taiwanese teas. This is hardly surprising, as Taiwan borders Fujian, and although it has developed its own tea styles over time, it drew inspiration from teas like this one.

This tea comes from a plantation that has not used chemical pesticides for over a decade, which are quite common in the region. The tea trees grow alongside wild nature, including many flowering trees like osmanthus. It is said that such proximity adds new flavors to the brew. It’s hard to be certain, as this Tie Guan Yin is rich in so many floral aromas, that it is impossible to list them all.

Our impressions

Antoni

The enormous popularity of this type of tea caused us quite a bit of trouble. From the very beginning, we were determined to find a good Tie Guan Yin, but finding one that we could be proud of took us a full three years. Teas as famous as TGY are produced en masse, as they sell themselves just by name alone. The market is therefore flooded with low-quality Iron Buddha teas. Drinking more and more sour and bland Tie Guan Yins, we were losing hope, until we finally found this one. Just looking at the leaves, our eyes lit up. This is definitely one of the best TGYs of the Qing Xiang style, which is a modern, floral approach to this tea. It is fresh, milky, and sweet. It has everything I look for in such teas .
