Chahai, meaning “the sea of tea”, also called gongdaobei, “the cup of fairness”. It is a traditional vessel used when brewing tea in the Eastern style. The name cup of fairness sounds a bit funny in Polish, but it describes its purpose very well. When brewing tea in tiny teapots or gaiwans, the leaves are steeped for a very short time. If we poured the tea straight from them into the cups, each person would get a different taste. The first would receive the lightest infusion, and the last the strongest one, steeped the longest. This is why the tea is traditionally poured into one vessel first, and only then divided evenly into all the cups.

This gongdaobei has a pleasant, gentle character. It shows the natural beige color of the clay, in places filled with sugary crackled glaze. The subtle streaks are applied very sparingly, and we really like the soft swirl that formed inside. The vessel of course pours with a nice, even stream, and it has thicker walls, so it should not burn your hand even when you brew tea with really hot water.

Artur Rej crafts artistic teaware in his studio nestled in the Bóbr Valley Landscape Park, where he also runs pottery workshops. His ceramic style is truly distinctive—his pieces are known for their cheerful, rich colors and soft, rounded forms that invite touch as much as admiration.
