SHIBORIDASHI #1 – ARTUR REJ

Shiboridashi is a Japanese variation of a gaiwan, the traditional small vessel used for brewing tea. You can learn more about it here.

Shiboridashi was created with delicate Japanese teas in mind, although you can use it to comfortably brew any kind of tea. It differs from a gaiwan thanks to its spout and the small grooves inside that act as a built in strainer able to hold back even the tiniest leaves.

A special flat shape makes it wonderfully comfortable to brew light teas like gyokuro. Because the water has a large surface area exposed to the air, it cools more quickly — which means you can start with slightly hotter water. In the first seconds it draws out a wealth of beautiful flavors, and then cools down fast enough that you don’t have to worry about over‑brewing the tea.

The shibo itself is truly beautiful — a tiny work of art, in our view one of the most stunning pieces Artur Rej has ever made. The wintry white of the glossy glaze pairs wonderfully with the contrasting bright decorations: red and black details that are a pleasure to rest your eyes on. Inside, the vessel has a warm beige tone enriched with noble black chamotte.

Capacity 90 ml, perfect for two or three people.

The shiboridashi is glazed, so it doesn’t affect the taste of the tea and is suitable for dishwasher cleaning.
