A shiboridashi is a Japanese-style counterpart to the Chinese gaiwan—a thoughtfully designed fusion of bowl and teapot. It consists of a shallow vessel with a lid and a finely toothed spout, which allows for smooth, controlled pouring while catching even the finest Japanese tea leaves. This clever design makes it especially suitable for brewing delicate, high-quality teas like gyokuro or sencha, where precision and gentleness are key.
This vessel immediately draws the eye! Its lid is truly extraordinary—resembling the wrinkled skin of an ancient dinosaur or a satellite view of a snow-covered town. The effect was achieved through the use of special additives during firing. The textured white surface is not only visually intriguing but also deeply satisfying to the touch. One side of the lid is broken up by a patch of soft brown, whose geometric precision adds a pleasant contrast to the overall form.
The rest of the vessel follows suit—it has elegant, tidy proportions and a classic, understated charm. It serves as the perfect backdrop for the more abstract lid. Had the entire piece been colorful or asymmetrical, it might have felt overwhelming. But thanks to its subtle, quiet form, everything comes together with effortless grace.
Seven precisely carved grooves ensure a strong, elegant pour and prevent clogging—even when brewing the finest of tea leaves.
Capacity: approximately 70 milliliters—perfectly suited for one or two people.
The interior of the vessel is glazed in white, highlighting the beauty of the tea leaves placed inside and allowing for a clear appreciation of both their form and the color of the infusion. Thanks to the glazing, the shiboridashi does not affect the taste of the tea and is dishwasher safe.
