It is with absolute joy that we present to you a truly unique tea, like no other in the world: Port Wine Oolong. This tea is the result of an exceptional collaboration between Chinese plantations, Portuguese wineries, and enthusiasts from the micro tea plantation Cha Camelia in the Porto province.
Originally named “Pipacha,” which literally means “barrel tea,” it emerged from years of painstaking experiments by Dirk Niepoort and Nina Gruntkowska, who are behind the Cha Camelia project. Its base is a medium-oxidized oolong tea from China’s Fujian province, similar in character to Oriental Beauty. This tea was aged in wooden barrels used for maturing strong red Port wine. The result is an absolutely unique brew with a deep, natural, wine-like flavor. Where is the line between wine and tea?
It’s worth noting the uniqueness of this tea project. Access to such barrels and the necessary equipment is limited to the famous, traditional Port wine “houses.” Fortunately, Dirk Niepoort runs one of them. Moreover, the entire storage process had to be developed from scratch and required many years of patience, testing, and calibration. May each cup of this masterpiece remind us of the infinite flavors of tea!
We encourage you to follow the Cha Camelia project on Instagram and to try their unique green teas, produced 100% by hand at their microtea plantation near Porto.
