Amber Heart is a fermented pu-erh shu (ripe), in which the typical earthiness of pu-erh is complemented by unique sweetness. The infusion is smooth and warming, with pleasant notes of wood and spices. In contrast to “raw” pu-erh sheng, pu-erh shu lacks bitterness and does not irritate the stomach.
We named it Amber Heart due to the dark golden color of the infusion and because of the unique form of the leaves, tiny nuggets in the shape of a heart. This type of tea in China is called Lao Cha Tou.
During the production of pu-erh shu, the leaves are piled into stacks, which are then sprayed with water to provide additional moisture that accelerates the fermentation process. Lao Cha Tou is the tea from the very bottom of these stacks, fermenting in the highest humidity. Sugars and the most intense flavors flow down there from the entire batch of tea, making these nuggets noticeably sweeter than your typical shu pu-erh.
Amber Heart is the bottom layer of our Ancient Ripe Pu-erh batch, made from gushu, which are old trees that have at least 100 years. We encourage you to compare both of these teas! Although they come from the same trees, they clearly differ in character..
