A complete set for traditional tea brewing. It includes two cups, a chahai (“the sea of tea,” used for decanting and sharing the brew), and a shiboridashi — a simple vessel for brewing tea in the Japanese style. The entire set is wheel‑thrown by Kraków‑based artist Anna Krężołek.

Ania is not only a ceramicist but also an architect, and it shows in her vessels. The set is thoughtfully designed and precisely calculated — and it even has some remarkable features! The whole ensemble nests together like a matryoshka, making it easy to transport, and it fits perfectly into a komebukuro travel pouch. A truly unique aspect of this set is that the shiboridashi lid also fits the chahai, which is likewise grooved to help strain the leaves. This means that if you want to serve a larger group, you can turn the chahai into a large shiboridashi and brew a generous amount of tea!

This set features warm, sandy tones, with a generous amount of chamotte — tiny specks of darker clay that add a beautiful contrast. The exterior and interior surfaces share the same finish, and you can see the subtle marks left by hand‑throwing on the wheel.

The vessels have a distinctive stoneware character. They’re heavy, strong, and solid, pouring with a full, powerful stream. Thanks to their thick walls, they don’t heat up or burn your hands. I’ve purchased a twin set myself and absolutely love using it — the precision of the pieces makes tea preparation wonderfully neat and comfortable.

The shiboridashi holds 160 ml of water, the cups up to 60 ml, and the chahai (also usable as a shiboridashi) holds 260 ml. The vessels are versatile and suitable for all types of tea; they’re glazed, so they don’t affect the flavor of the brew. The gap between the lid and the serrated spout is tight yet wide, meaning that even the finest Japanese teas won’t slip into the cups, while the pour remains fast. Emptying a full shiboridashi takes less than five seconds — a masterful speed for 160 ml of water. All pieces are dishwasher‑safe.
