Behind the mysterious name of Ruby #18 lies the Taiwanese cultivar Hong Yu (Red Jade, or just Jade). Invented in 1999, it was designated number 18 by Taiwan’s Tea Research and Extension Station (TRES). From exactly these bushes an extremely peculiar black tea is produced, which we have the pleasure of having available in our shop.
It’s difficult to compare Ruby #18 with any other tea. An open package greets us with the unique menthol aroma of camphor and pine forest, while the infusion has a deep, jade hue, adding to the blend of sweet. ripe fruits and somewhat crisper spicy notes. The whole experience is intense and despite this, there are many light, ethereal aromas. Ruby #18 has the distinct, mighty features of a black tea from Assam. By the way, this is no accident – around the Sun Moon Lake region, in which the majority of Taiwanese black teas are produced, at the beginning of the 20th century the first crops were grown from imported Burmese Camellia Assamica bushes.
Jade tea is a cross of the aforementioned Camellia Assamica and a local strain native to Taiwan (Camellia Formosensis). Apart from the tea’s unique flavour, the leaves’ distinct, violet highlights are also interesting. This is especially notable in the leaves of the White Ruby tea, which is also available from our shop.
